Rare Bird: Asfour Nader

In my 8 years of blogging, first privately as I shared family news with a selected private audience, then publicly sharing thoughts I wrote in English and in Arabic, this is the first blog post I did NOT want to write. But here I am writing it because I felt I had to.

Why am I doing this to myself? I guess it’s because I fell in love with a boy who was 12 years old, and forever will be. I fell in love with a boy I’ve never met, and I never will. I fell in love with a boy called Jack. I heard about Jack during the first few months of mothering my daughter. Those long days and nights that looked all the same as I tried to navigate this new life with a toddler boy and a new born girl were extremely lonely and I needed something, anything to help me survive.

My sister’s friend shared an article from Momastery on her facebook page and that’s how I got to know Glennon, so I started reading her posts which one day lead me to Anna’s blog “An Inch of Grey” and the story of Jack’s accident. It was easy to do the math, Jack died two weeks after my daughter was born. Later I’ll start hating math because it revealed so much of what I had in common with Anna, only a decade ahead of me. In the fall of 2011 Anna was 42 years old and I was 32. Her jack was 12 and my son was 2, her Margret was 10 and my daughter was a few months old. We’re both Christian, believers, church goers, and English teachers, veterans to be more specific, neither one of us is teaching now (or was teaching 4 years ago) and I’ve recently developed a love for painting furniture to decorate my gift shop/art gallery Kharbashat-Doodle. Then gradually over the past 4 years my son seemed to have so much in common with Jack. He too loves words, Legos, acting, jigsaw puzzles, and making up new games. He is kind to his sister (also 2 years younger than him) and he loves his Sunday School class as his love for God is starting to show and grow. Did I mention how cute and funny he is too?

I mourned with Anna, I grieved with her overseas. I wrote her a few e-mails and comments telling her that a Syrian mother married to an Egyptian pastor is praying for her and sending her love all the way from Alexandria, Egypt. Then when Anna posted a question on her blog for readers to choose the best title for her upcoming book about Jack, I clicked on the one choice that seemed to make most sense “Rare Bird”, apparently many readers and friends picked the same title and the book was out. When I started planning to ask my sister to order it for me and send it with someone coming from the US to Egypt, I received a message from one of my American friends, Jessica, who is also a pastor’s wife asking if there’s a certain book I’d like her to buy me because a guy from their church is coming to spend a few months in Alexandria!

Jessica’s sweet gift sat on my night stand for months. It wasn’t until last week that I decided to read “Rare Bird”, From the first few pages I knew two things, I need an extra dose of courage to continue and I’ll end up writing something about this book. I hated it and loved it at the same time. Anna's writing style, the way she crafted words and sentences with both language skills and honesty was captivating. She took me with her back in time to the last few months of 2011 and to a brand new state not included among the five I’ve visited when I went to the US in 1996, 2000, and 2001. I felt I was physically right there on September 10th 2011. I rarely cry when I read sad novels, but this is not a novel, it didn’t even feel like a book at all, it felt more like a movie, one of these 7D theaters in which you experience the story with more senses than you thought you had. I was stupid enough to take the book with me once as I waited for my son to finish his piano lesson, and I started crying! I wonder what the other parents in that waiting room thought, she looks like a crazy mother, she doesn’t look Egyptian, she’s holding a book in English, we pity her son…. I don’t know and I didn’t care.

I received the book months ago, and the timing I chose to read it was a bad one , we’ve just celebrated my daughter’s 4th birthday which meant that in a few days Anna, along with everyone who knew and loved Jack will commemorate 4 years of his departure. I couldn’t help but think that this year Anna turns 46, the same age her mom was when she died. Why am I doing all these calculations and making all these connections in my head? Maybe because I was looking for more and more things to mark my family as DIFFERENT from Anna’s, different enough to feel safe!

As a Presbyterian Christian by birth, I didn’t grow up to believe in signs, but I come from a Middle Eastern culture that believes in luck and optimism. It’s also a culture that believes in the evil eye and envy. In my family and at church we were raised to believe that our future, luck, or destiny is guaranteed in God’s plan for our lives, so we need to worry not. It’s easy to believe this and relax when you’re not a parent yet, a mother to be specific, but when you grow up and discover the harsh fact of life that bad things do happen to good people then you start to doubt your faith. I’ve never doubted that God is good, but I’ve never had to face a tragedy that shook me to the core and turned my world upside down. The war in Syria is the most recent tragedy I've experienced, with its ugly daily bloodshed and destruction, with horror stories of ISIS taking over beautiful parts of my beloved country, treating humans in the most savage of ways, left me bewildered and depressed. I mourn my country, a country I used to visit twice a year but haven’t seen in almost 5 years now. Still I count my blessings in spite of all the pain and tears. My uncles, aunts, and first cousins are all safe and healthy, at least physically. My friends are all still alive, my parents’ apartment, the only place I knew and called “home” is still there in a relatively safe area in Damascus, so I can still dream of one day going there and getting my photo albums, stacks of letters, journals and diaries. I dream about taking my kids there to visit their grandparents who will give them my childhood toys. When I get depressed upon hearing more bad news from inside Syria or news about refugees abroad, I try to re-count my blessings, which is easy sometimes because I don’t have a firsthand experience of what my friends and family members have been through and are still enduring.

So when it comes to signs, I kind of wish I believed in them. They would’ve saved me so much trouble making big decisions in my life, like choosing my husband and moving to Egypt. And later it could’ve saved my husband and I the hard weeks of making difficult choices regarding our kids, life, work, and ministry. My husband believes that God gave us our brains, life experiences, and the Holy Spirit to guide our decision making process. We talked about it a lot as I shared with him my secret wish for a story like Giddeon’s in the Old Testament with his wool fleece (Judges 6 : 37), but we don’t do signs in our family, we don’t ask for them, we don’t look or wait for them. Instead, we think, we pray, we consult experts, we give ourselves a time frame, and we decide.

But yesterday, something happened, it made me re-visit this area of not believing in signs. I was reading the Rara Avis chapter of Rare Bird, specifically page 154 that has the poem Anna’s friend wrote about Jack. I read the poem (for the second time because I had read it previously on the blog) then Anna wrote about the time she posted this poem on her blog and started receiving stories from all over the globe. “They are amazing stories of birds catching people’s attention at precisely the moment they think of Jack.”. My son sat next to me as I read early in the morning, he woke up with the same severe headache he had the night before due to his high fever. I gave him his medicine and he decided not to go back to bed so we went to the living room and he started building something with his Legoes as I grabbed my book and read.

Finishing the poem and the page next to it I choked, I didn’t want to cry, besides, it’s too early in the morning to start crying, my son is right next to me, a little sick but alive. So I thought I’ll smile instead, thinking of the so many people who thought of Jack and saw birds. Then, all of a sudden, in the silence of the 6am Alexandrian morning I hear it, so clear and close, coming from our bedroom. Our rented apartment is on the 11th floor and even though it overlooks the golf field of the famous Sporting Club in Alexandria, it’s difficult for birds to make it this high above the tall trees. I’ve seen birds by our bedroom window often but not that often, and definitely not in the blazing heat of August. The window is covered with a fine metal net that doesn’t allow mosquitoes and other insects through.

When I heard the bird sing, I grabbed my camera and walked slowly to the bedroom to try and take a photo without scaring the bird away or waking up my husband. I knew if I took a good picture then this will prove to me that this sign is not a figment of my imgagination. The picture was bad and hardly showed any bird, then the bird flew and stood on the rusty laundry bar I never use, I took another picture, still with disbelief. Then I said to myself, if I can capture the bird’s face looking right at the lence in my hand then I’ll believe. Much like Thomas’ request upon hearing the story of Jesus’ resurrection. And here it is.

Dear Anna,

Your book took me on a roller coaster experience of reading such an amazing story about pain and hope. At times I wanted the book to end so the story would end with it and I can walk away and pretend none of it happened to you and it never found its way into my life. At other times I read and read and never wanted the book to end because I wanted to know more about Jack and to love him more, I wanted to know how you’re doing years after the accident.

I found the book to be scary, because it got me thinking that something might happen to my family, something so sudden and tragic that it will leave me broken beyond repair. I keep convincing myself that the real reason I’m reading your book is to help grieving people and as a pastor's wife to understand their struggles more. The psychology courses I took in collage fifteen years ago are very helpful, but a book such as yours written through the "perspecticles" (Glennon’s word) of a Christian mother is definitely a priceless reference. But you’re not a case study, and I’m not writing a term paper. It’s Jack we’re talking about, it’s Jack we’re missing, and it’s Jack’s life we’re celebrating. So my Egyptian bird came to remind me of that. Asfour Nader. “Asfour” (starts with the letter “ع” Ayn articulated from deep down in the throat) means “Bird” in Arabic. And “Nader” means “Rare”, noting that nouns in Arabic always come before adjectives.

The Rara Avis chapter was a beautiful one, so beautiful I didn’t cry till the very end, instead I had misty eyes, goosebumps, and a smile on my face. It made me love the bird metaphor even more. A bird not a fish, for instant, because fish swim but birds soar. This chapter was a milestone in the journey of reading the book, it gave me peace and comfort. One thing caught my attention is the fact that there’s no English word for a parent who lost a child, while in Arabic there is. It’s not a very pleasant word to hear, it sounds bitter, more like a curse or an insult. It’s mostly used in the feminine form for mothers and you can very rarely hear the masculine one for fathers, the root can be used for losing an offspring or a loved one.

This year Margret is two years OLDER than Jack. At the beginning of your new school year in the USA and ours starting next month, I wish and pray for Margret to have a safe, fun, and fruitful year, regardless of the painful math!

I worked as a part-time then free-lance translator for over 7 years during which I kept contemplating the idea of translating a book. But I kept shoving it to the back of my mind convinced that book translation is for people above the age of sixty, so I still have 24 years before I start. I don’t know how serious I was when I felt that Rare Bird might just be the first book I’ll translate, but what I do know is that it HAS to be translated into Arabic Anna, please make sure you have Arabic on the list of languages you’d like to see your book published in.

From the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, I'm sending you a huge THANK YOU. Thank you Anna for every minute, hour, and day you spent, thank you for every tear you shed writing this book till it saw the light. I think all Christian mothers should read it. It took one brave bereaved believer mom to write it and it took me all my courage to read it. Thank you for this journey you honored me to be part of, I’ve learned so much as your words addressed specific fears and doubts I have in my own faith in Jesus. Not only your book has nothing dishonoring to God (one among the many fears you confessed), but it also brings glory to God. The God we all tend to put in a box like you said you did, our little own boxes are as different as we are. But God surely is bigger, greater, and more active than we can ever conceive.  The most beautiful part of your book  is what comes next, your story is a real and an ongoing one, I don’t have to wonder what will happen to the characters beyond the book cover because you’ll keep us updated as we keep praying for you, Tim, and Margret.

Shukran Anna.
Love,
Riham

when humanity failes

In case you don't know what these photos represent, here's a list for you to google what happened during this week of July 2014:

Iraq - Mosul - Christian families
Egypt - 21 - Border guards
Palestine - Gaza - 2014 - Bloodiest day
Syria - Raqqah - Stoning to death
Netherlands - MH17

I recognize no difference... humanity failed... faces of victims everywhere looking at us... a long gaze full of why's... they speak to us...

I'm a soldier, a fresh graduate from med school, with high honors, I'm an OB, all I wanted to do is help bring babies to this life, bring life... help women... get married... have kids of my own... I was on duty, one year of army service... I got killed... humanity failed me

I'm a boy, playing on the beach with my friends, certain propaganda says I was going to grow up and become a terrorist... but this is my beach, my land, my right to live... I got killed... humanity failed me

I'm a girl, walking and walking and walking... "why did we leave home Mama?"... "where are we now?"... "I'm hungry Mama, I want my toys, my church, my city"... why are these people around me getting killed?... who let these people take our home?... I'm lost in the unknown future in the middle of nowhere... humanity failed me

We're a couple... going on vacation... we have big plans for our summer... we got killed... humanity failed us

I'm a woman... accused of something I did or didn't do... sentenced to death... if death comes in different tastes then here's one of the ugliest options... one stone after the other... I got killed... humanity failed me

ENOUGH bloodshed.... there's no difference... religion, color, nationality, occupation, age, dreams, family, friends, past, future.... we all have different lives but we share one right... THE RIGHT TO LIVE... I recognize no difference... we're all the same... THESE are all the same... each and every life is precious...

move from the why to the what... ask yourself WHAT can I do? what SHOULD I do when humanity fails?

Syria, don't cry

The Syrian anthem like never before.... Syria itself is like never before... listening to this piece I couldn't hold back my tears, my heart is racing, blood rushing through my lungs, I could feel the tears of a million people falling down cold and soft like raindrops on my face, I saw a rainbow with a zillion color shades, I heard our footsteps marching into our beloved homeland with victory blended in deep sorrow... that's what happens when creativity brings you a piece of music with so much bitterness and beauty at the same time... presented with passion and hope... thank you Rev. Elias Jabbour

Syria, don't cry

365.25 Christmases

a couple of days ago i was bored to the point that i needed anything to help me face "the hours", i couldn't read or play with the children yet there were a couple of hours left before my husband comes back home and it's time to put the kids to bed when i'll crash right beside them on what's now called our "family bed" since the cold storm that hit the MENA region ... last MONTH !

so i made the tough decision of watching a movie, i'm very aware and careful of what appears on our T.V screen (practically nothing but cartoon shows, i'm even selective there too) i had to choose wisely because even though the kids will pretend to be busy playing around me in the living room, they'll repeat words from the movie and some scenes will catch their attention every few minutes... i had two options (on DVD): "Four Christmases" and "The Holiday"... because i love the second one so much i hated the idea of a possibility of me not giving my full attention to one of my favorite movies and i decided to watch Four Christmases... it wasn't too long before i discovered what a bad choice this was and switched DVD's

this morning, one of my Armenian friends who is a pastor was wondering if it's accurate to call the 6th of January (today) "Armenian Christmas" and my comment on his facebook status was: "Egyptian Christians (Orthodox and Evangelical) celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January so why not have 365 names for Christmas to experience it every single day..."

this got me thinking about Christmas, aside from the cliche words and ideas we parrot every year, what does Christmas mean to me? on the 24th of December i missed the chance to reflect and celebrate, read this post if you're wondering why, so the great news was that i get to have a second chance while the majority of Christians around the world have started to make plans of how to take down their Christmas decoration, we (Armenians and Egyptian Christians) are just getting started.

as excited as i was to FULLY benefit from this 2nd chance i quickly realized that i am me... i need more than just a 2nd chance that comes in the middle of THE SEASON, duh... Christmas (1st or 2nd chances) just HAVE to come during the season of celebration... but this defeats the purpose, for me this can't count as a chance because we'd be still busy with events, celebrations, church activities... etc we shower, wear our clothes and smiles, and show up as happily as socially expected and accepted of our family.... add to this craziness my daughters fever of more than 40 C for three nights (including New Year's Eve) and my son's long school vacation... just tell me where exactly is this chance to TRULY celebrate Christmas? unless Christmas after all really means new clothes (for the kids), wrapped gifts (also for the kids, but i wrapped two old yet unused items for myself and two for my husband because you know, kids under the age of 5 still believe that Santa Clause exists and i wanted him to be a fan of equal rights between children and adults), food (ready, simple, complex... just any kind of edible material, btw this year i added pickles which turned out to be a great idea), and tree (which looked like this eventually and won the "best tree" award in 8 Christmases)
(sharpening my primitive photography skills i also applied for the "best blur" award hoping that this photo will win and guest what? it did)
so if i, so far, know of 3 official Christmases that somehow i find myself entitled to celebrate (yes all 3 of them) yet can't find, understand and reflect on the true essence of Christmas then why not have 365.25 Christmases? one for every day of the year with an extra one during leap years, this way we'll get a new chance every morning to celebrate what Christmas really means.

and if you're waiting for an answer to the question "what does Christmas mean to me/you?" that's why you're reading on, then i have to tell you at this point that you won't find one here simply because my only New Year's resolution for 2014 so far is to celebrate Christmas every day of the year this year hoping that maybe along the journey, with some trial and error, i might find the answer, i might even find 365.25 answers when 2015 arrives, i don't know, but for a start i've decided to take some practical steps the first of which is to follow the advise of one of my friends who is committed to writing one thing she's "thankful for" every day, and last night, the thing i was thankful for was a moment of happiness that i haven't realized was there until it was already gone, i had finished brushing my teeth and while i was flossing something reminded me of the war in Syria, i had forgotten about it for a few hours during the day and when i remembered it again, it was too late, the magic effect of that potion i call "forgetfulness and neglect" was already gone and my tongue said good bye to the taste of happiness so familiar yet so remote ever since my country started aching... and me too... that's why a few days ago when i watched The Holiday movie there was a whole new set of depths and meanings to my favorite quote when Simpkins says to Miles:

"I understand feeling as small and insignificant as humanly possible. And how it can actually ache in places you didn't know you had inside you. And it doesn't matter how many new haircuts you get, or gyms you join, or how many glasses of chardonnay you drink with your girlfriends... you still go to bed every night going over every detail and wonder what you did wrong or how you could have misunderstood. And how in the hell of that brief moment you could think that you were that happy. And sometimes you can even convince yourself that he'll see the light and show up at your door. And after all that, however long all that may be, you'll go somewhere new. And you'll meet people who make you feel worthwhile again. And little pieces of your soul will finally come back. And all that fuzzy stuff, those years of your life that you wasted, that will eventually begin to fade."

... and THAT's how much i love my country... Merry Christmas to you all celebrating today and every day...

a tale of two goodbyes

date: 1 October 2006
city: Cairo

she carried her handbag, left her apartment which was right next to "Kobry El Kobba" metro station, took the Cairo underground metro to "Esaaf" station. she felt more comfortable riding one of the first two metro cars for women and children only. half an hour later she got off, walked upstairs to hail a taxi: "26 July St. please". At Shagaret El Dor St. corner the taxi stopped and she had no problem remembering the address because she came here a few days earlier for an interview, it was September 27th and when her husband came to pick her up in their FiFi (that was the nick name of their red Fiat 128 hatchback car) she found a wrapped gift on her seat. "happy 1st montharsary dear" her husband said. he bought her a wooden salad set of one large bowel and two small ones because he knew how much she loves colorful salads.

the Cairo bureau of this newspaper was located in Zamalek, the balcony overlooked nice gardens and she could hear birds singing in harmony with the sound of the computer keyboard. her fingers played quickly on the computer, her head moved from the Arabic newspapers spread open next to her on the large table at the center of the rectangular office to the screen in front of her, her brain raced to translate news headlines from Arabic to English. she had a great first day on her part-time job.

for a whole year, this was her daily routine with a one-hour commute to work, sometimes she preferred to walk the first half of the distance on her way back home even though the Boulak and Abou El Ela area can give you a "cultural shock" walking down that bridge connecting Zamalek with that poor market place, but an experience in Cairo's public transportation wasn't on her list because it was a whole package of filthy mini vans, over crowded buses, and a selection of harassment incidents she can't pick and choose from.

at the end of that year she and her husband had to move from Cairo to Alexandria, this young couple decided to inform family, friends, and acquaintances in Cairo ahead of time, so she went to tell her boss that she's leaving. to her surprise, the assistant journalist came up with a brilliant idea and the boss approved of it: "How about you do the same translation but from home? You'll be online during the same working hours you spend here. Let's try it while you're still in Cairo then we'll surely know that it's going to work after you move to Alex." and this was the first e-mail she sent :

the years passed by and she spent a total 7 years and 3 months in this part-time job. so much happened during these 86 months, but she kept sending that e-mail every morning and waiting for more translation requests from the boss. the Cairo bureau of this newspaper changed 5 journalists during her stay, each one of them appreciated her work and she kept the job, even when she traveled she would e-mail the headlines and when she gave birth to her first son she took two weeks off then went back to work even if it meant typing the translation at 3 or 4 am with the newborn baby on her arm. when the Global Financial Crisis started she didn't ask for a raise but when her daughter arrived she did and the request was rejected. when the last boss informed her that the end of 2013 will witness the end of her work she had mixed feelings.

at first she felt sad and scared, she was sad to lose a job that was more like a miracle, it was very convenient for her to work form home while she was pregnant the first and second time and even more convenient when she had the kids with no help around she was able to both look after them and work from home, but she felt sad because whatever income her salary added was more needed now than ever, even though her salary witnessed no change what so ever during these 7 years and 3 months regardless of the climb that prices witnessed between 2006 and 2013 yet she did not wish for this income to stop.

a few weeks after she received the news the initial fear and sadness started to fade and were gradually replaced by excitement and hope, she felt that she's set free, this job was perfect but only for a while, it's no longer the best thing for her and she enjoyed this feeling of anticipation, waiting, searching, and guessing what could be her next perfect step... now she's free, the sky is the limit (with 2 kids in the picture! or the frame maybe), she can think outside the box and decide what she loves and can do for a living.

so the end of 2013 witnessed the first goodbye for her, the last time she types the word "Headlines" in the morning e-mail subject-line, the last time she opens these three newspapers first thing in the morning, the last time she clicks "send" so that the e-mail would arrive on time... there's nothing else in her life that she was committed to doing for so long, doing the very same thing every single day (except on weekends) for 87 months, not even her quite time... it was hard to send this last e-mail

and say goodbye to what has become part of who she is, but she wondered which one of these two goodbyes was more painful...

2013 wasn't as good as all Syrians expected, hoped, and prayed for... it wasn't as bad as our worst nightmare either... it was much worse... one might think that saying goodbye to a bad year is easy because one can't wait to put it behind them and open a new page, but the year 2013 is hard to say goodbye to, because it has to make up for the mess she's leaving behind, we can't just forgive her and let her pass (the word "year" in the Arabic language is feminine) shouldn't she pay for the damage she caused before bidding us farewell? but to be realistic, if 2013 is to be sent to prison until she pays her dept then she'll be in jail for a decade, a century, or maybe forever. so we have no choice but to let 2013 go and make some room for 2014 to deal with the old package and unfold what she has prepared for us.

date: 31 December 2013
city: Alexandria

she, the blog writer, at the end of this day, made peace with these two goodbyes looking forward to new beginnings, to finding a new job, to peace being restored in Syria, to a new year as sweet and flavored as our homemade ginger Christmas cookies...

all i w-a-n-t need for Christmas

the title should look like this: all i want  need for Christmas

i'm raising the white flag... giving up, on so many things, including getting this post title appear as i want!!!
yesterday i was watching the sunset, from our famous window, and i started panting all of a sudden, i wanted to scream at the sun "STOP... don't set... yet... i'm not ready" i didn't actually yell, i just kept taking photos of the clouds with shades of gray and salmon pink pretending that everything is under control and that all is "cool" while NOTHING was...

as i listened to the clicking sound of my camera to distract my attention i got even more nervous... it sounded like a clock... the more photos i took the more clicks i heard the more clock ticking there was...

Christmas Eve of the year 2013 arrived so suddenly for me i almost had a panic attack. being the control-freak-perfectionist-pintrest-addict-mama i am, i couldn't accept the fact that "it's here"... khalas... it's Christmas Eve already...

EVERYTHING is a mess... my brain is a mess and i can't trace my thoughts... my heart is a mess and i no longer recognize my feelings and i'm unable to give each one a proper universal name... my sorrow is a mess and my tears drop here and there while i want to have an "organized" grief and "well distributed" tears... even the space i live in is a mess (unclean apartment, untidy rooms, no food, no matching outfits for all 4 of us, no celebration plans.... so much is missing) i need the sun to give me just a little more time so i could "fill in the blanks" with proper and relevant ideas, emotions, reactions, tangible stuff and pinned down Christmas-related dates and places an activities...

but it was too late to do all of that in just a few minutes or even hours... i had no plan B, i usually do, even though i hate plan B's, i'm a perfectionist and i can only have a plan A and it HAS to go well, but yeah with two kids under the age of five i "learned" how to make plans other than A.... keep a plan B, C all the way to plan Z within reach... just in case... but this time i did not plan AT ALL, what a shame... this shame tastes different, it's Christmas Shame... Rihamic Christmas Shame... the new disease that i seem to have developed this year... RCS

similar to every other sudden incident, you need to know a few standard safety procedures to tell you what to do in case of a fire, an earthquake, an attack by aliens... or in case of an RCS

a peak through the window into our home could've given you a glimpse of what's it like inside my head&heart... i had the choice to either keep pretending and just say that it's not Christmas Eve, borrow the first stage of grief "denial", anyhow in Egypt we celebrate Christmas on January 7th so Christmas Eve is still two weeks away... OR... look my RCS in the face and start fighting back... i chose the latter

i'm new to my RCS so i didn't know whether just shaking it off would work or i need serious fighting, like armor and weapons and all of that so at first i tried to scare my RCS away gently but this didn't work... so it was time for some serious fighting and if it's "shame" then according to Daring Greatly book/manual the first anti-shame tool is LIGHT... i need more LIGHT to come into my head, heart, and home...

Tip/Armor Number One: The first (and maybe only) anti-RCS weapon is Light, apply it to the 3 H's (head/heart/home)

once i was able to allow some light to come in through a few cracks i could see clearly that things are not THAT bad... it's enough that we're all healthy, we have an actual home with actual walls and a ceiling... how about starting there, anywhere, there's always a point i can start from and not just tell myself that everything will be ok... no... i should practice saying: "everything IS ok... already"... everything is ok, everything is acceptable, is good enough, is sufficient enough, is perfect enough...

so the sunset was over and it was dark... there was no time to use the vacuum cleaner, no time to cook dinner or prepare any dessert, no time to sort out all the depressing thoughts about refugees and no time to categorize feelings about how bitter Christmas tastes with the war in Syria... i had to get started, i had to decide that i was ready for Christmas eve... decide to enjoy it... just the way things are... prepare Him room (maybe tidy the living room up a little, just this room)... when there's room my ears will be sensitive enough to hear the knock at the door... i'll be so imperfectly ready with whatever room is available in my 3 H's... so i opened the door wide enough (as wide as i could at that point) and THE light came in and took care of a few things inside... i didn't witness any miracle yesterday night, it was a Christmas Eve like never before (in a bad sense) i was missing my family's traditions in Damascus... the longing was too bad to bear this year... the cold, the smell in the air, the lights, the ordinary yearly Christmas stupid stuff we did... just counting a few things makes my heart ache... i never imagined that in addition to destroying the present and the future of a country and a people, war can also sneak into your past and rob parts of your warmest memories...

regardless of this bad state of my 3 H's i was able to prepare Him room, a very small one but it was big enough... i was able to be still, for a very short while, but it was long enough... it was a very humble room but in His eyes it was perfect enough... because if somebody can know and understand what i'm going through then it's the very Child who was born last night for THIS VERY REASON... Hebrews 2 : 18 says: "Because he himself was born a refugee away from his home, he is able to help those who are refugees"... (you can look up the original verse if this new Syrian version looks unfamiliar to you)

on the less philosophical/depressing level ... i mean domestically speaking... this is how our feast, eventually, looked like (the menu mainly featured pop corn, french fries and nuts, a fruit salad and a bar of chocolate cut in pieces!!)

... and the tree (the lights on the floor will twinkle on the tree at some point, but for now enjoy the neck exercise and tilt your head to the left... see? the tree is strait)

...and the kids (the Bible doesn't say there were THREE wise men... there could've been only two... with their own kind and degree of wisdom)

all of these photos are so imperfectly perfect that i found them worthy of my signature.

so there's nothing that i really want for Christmas this year, not because i have it all, i don't, but i'm trying to apply the Arabic proverb: "If what you want is not, then want what is" (does it make any sense at all in English? i'm trying to play on the verb to "be" to make it sound like the Arabic version... i guess you got the point) maybe i don't want anything this Christmas but there's so much that i NEED this Christmas... it's not "i" as in "me, myself and Riham" but a different kind of "i"... i'm speaking on behalf of a multitude of people who stand on different points along the "suffering spectrum"... i need peace in my country (Syria needs peace), i need a shelter for the homeless (displaced Syrians need a shelter), i need a normal childhood (Syrian children need a normal childhood), i need a place to call home (Syrian refugees need a place to call home)...

some people think that this still counts as self-centerdness when i keep saying Syria and Syrians... but aren't we the number 1 topic in news headline this Christmas? haven't we won the 1st place for so many categories recently? (worst humanitarian crisis in decades, largest death toll of children in such a short time, biggest displacement of civilians in so and so, worst educational and health conditions of a nation in the area.... )

so if by raising awareness about the Syrian crisis this Christmas i'm being self-centered then why not look at it in a different way and say that i'm being "cool" and following the latest "fashion" and staying up to date by speaking about the most "hot issue" globally... THE SYRIAN CRISIS... the "i"...

this Christmas... "i" need it ALL... that's ALL "i" need for Christmas...
